Professional portraits travel between cultures: a photograph taken in Sydney may appear on an international team page or conference programme. That does not mean you must choose an appearance intended to satisfy a vague global standard. Decide how you want colleagues and clients to recognise you first.
A practical question to answer before the service
An individual barber's questions are more useful than broad claims about Japanese or Western style. Do they ask what the photograph is for, which clothing you will wear and what you want to keep? Try asking, “Can we use this portrait brief without changing the features that feel like me?” The best reference is often your own photograph with a clear explanation, rather than a celebrity image chosen only because it looks conventionally professional.
Bring one or two reference photos and explain what is difficult on a normal workday: straight hair that does not move, sides that expand, a flat top, a fringe that will not flow, or a routine that takes too long. A useful consultation connects the visible shape to the time, tools and products you actually use.
