Japanese vs Western Barbering: When “Dry Look” Does Not Mean Unwashed Hair
Rika Kano

A dry look is usually a description of the finished appearance, but the phrase can be misunderstood when discussing grooming across languages. You might mean low shine, visible texture or hair that does not look heavily coated. Say which visual quality you are describing.

What to discuss with your barber

Ask the barber to distinguish preparation from appearance. A low shine finish can still involve washing, drying and careful product application. Japanese and Western barbers may use different terms for similar effects, so a visual example can settle the meaning quickly. Once you understand the steps, describe the finish in your own words. This gives your next appointment a clearer reference than repeating a phrase whose meaning was never checked.
