Japanese vs Western Barbering: Translating “Natural” Into a Styling Action
Rika Kano

The word natural can describe several different finishes. You might mean no visible product, a loose arrangement, a soft parting or hair that moves when touched. These meanings do not belong to one barbering culture, and they can vary between two clients in the same chair.

What to discuss with your barber

Instead of relying on the word alone, describe what you want your hands to be able to do afterwards. Should you be able to run your fingers through the front? Should the parting remain visible? Ask the barber to demonstrate that action at the end. A shared understanding of movement is often more useful than trying to translate a fashionable styling label perfectly between languages.

Plan your Sydney CBD appointment
