Japanese vs Western Barbering: The Final Design Should Be Explainable in Plain Words
Ryunosuke Kano

A carefully designed haircut should be describable without relying entirely on specialist terminology. A fuller back, a narrower upper side and a rounded front corner are plain descriptions of specific choices. They give both barber and client an accessible reference for the result.

What to discuss with your barber

This is a useful standard when comparing Japanese and Western barbering. Ask your barber to summarise the agreed shape before work begins. If the summary sounds different from what you pictured, the difference can be resolved while the plan is still flexible. Technical skill supports that agreement; it does not replace it. The most useful vocabulary is the vocabulary that makes your intended outline clear to both people.
