Down Perm or Hair Straightening? Understanding the Goal for Bulky Sides
Ryunosuke Kano

When straight hair sticks out at the sides, asking to make it straighter may not describe the result you need. The problem can be the way the hair sits away from the head rather than a curl you want removed.

Describe the direction, not just the texture

Tell your barber whether the side looks wide when dry, lifts above the ear or becomes difficult as it grows. Show the outline you would prefer. Down perm and straightening are not interchangeable requests: the treatment being discussed must match the desired direction and the actual hair condition. A service name alone does not decide suitability.

Check what the haircut can do first

Ask how the existing length contributes to the width and what would happen if it were shortened. Some clients prefer a close taper; others want to retain a softer, fuller side. Discuss that preference before choosing a chemical service. An iron perm may also enter the conversation when shape and movement are the goal, but it should not be substituted without explanation.

Confirm the available treatment

Both Ryunosuke and Rika can assess side bulk at HIROGINZA Sydney. Down perm is among our menu options, but confirm current availability of the requested technique before booking. Perm courses start at AUD250 with haircut and shaving included. Tell us about previous bleach, straightening and other chemical work; an iron perm is not recommended on bleached hair. The recommendation should follow an assessment, not an assumption about ethnicity or hair type.
