Left or Right Part? How to Explain Hair Direction From a Reference Photo
HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER 台北

You may want your hair to sweep the same way as a reference photo, but the right side of the screen is not necessarily your own right. When discussing a side part or swept fringe at a Taipei barbershop, confirm where you want the part on your own head as well as what you like in the image.

Company-produced haircut reference photo. It does not demonstrate the left and right directions discussed here or a particular finished parting.

Do not read the photo’s sides as your own

In a front-facing photo, the viewer and the person pictured describe left and right from different viewpoints. Selfies and edited images may also be mirrored. Rather than deciding on a “right part” from the screen alone, first point to the feature you like.

Then indicate the preferred side of your own head and say, “I want the part on my own right.” This helps both of you confirm the same position, even if you do not know whether the reference image has been mirrored.

Separate the position of the part from the direction of the fringe

“Part it to the right” can leave it unclear whether you mean a part located on the right or hair swept towards the right. Try stating both: “The part on my own right, with my fringe swept towards my left.”

Also use the photo to discuss whether you want a clearly visible part or a softer separation. Identify whether it is the parting line or the movement of the fringe that you like. They are separate details you can discuss.

Confirm the direction in the mirror before cutting

During the consultation, ask whether your hair can be arranged in the intended direction so you can check it. Use the mirror to review the part’s position, the fringe’s direction and how much forehead is visible. Point to your hair before cutting starts.

If you want to switch sides, explain where you usually part your hair. Whether the new direction works with your current length and growth pattern, and what styling it may need at home, requires looking at your actual hair. A photo alone cannot establish that a cut will reproduce the look.

A short example you can use

“Using my own left and right, I would like the part on my right and my fringe swept to my left. What I like in this photo is the movement of the fringe. Could we check the position and direction in the mirror before cutting?”

Change the sides and the visibility of the part to match your preference. If you are undecided, you do not need to choose a side before visiting. Bring the reference and show how you normally part your hair.
