Why a Fade Needs Different Techniques for Different Hair Types
Sou (Japanese)

A customer shows a photo and says:

“I want this fade.”

The reference is useful—but copying the exact same steps does not always create the same result.

Why?

Because every hair type behaves differently.

At HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER, we adjust our fade technique based on the customer’s hair density, texture, growth direction, and head shape.

Thick, Straight Hair

Thick, straight hair can create a very clean fade because the graduation is easy to see.

But it also has challenges.

When the hair becomes slightly longer, it can start pushing outward—especially around the sides and back.

Simply cutting that area shorter is not always the solution.

Sometimes we need to leave enough weight for the hair to lie naturally while carefully removing bulk above the fade.

Fine or Soft Hair

With finer hair, creating an extremely strong fade can sometimes produce too much contrast.

The blending needs to be controlled carefully so the transition does not appear too harsh.

Keeping slightly more length in certain areas can help create a fuller and more balanced silhouette.

Curly and Coily Hair

Curly and coily textures behave completely differently from straight hair.

The curl pattern changes how the graduation appears, and the natural texture itself becomes part of the fade.

Instead of trying to make every section behave like straight hair, the barber needs to understand how the curl pattern, density, and growth direction interact with the shape.

A clean outline combined with the right graduation can create a powerful result.

Growth Direction Changes Everything

Hair does not always grow straight down.

Around the temple, crown, behind the ears, and neckline, it may grow forward, backward, sideways, or in multiple directions.

These areas require adjustment.

Using exactly the same clipper movement everywhere can create uneven results.

A barber needs to read the hair while cutting it.

The Reference Photo Is the Starting Point

We always welcome reference photos.

They help us understand the impression you want.

But instead of simply copying the haircut, we adapt the idea to your own hair.

The fade height may change.

The amount of weight may change.

The connection to the top may change.

And that is exactly the point.

At HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER, our goal is not to reproduce someone else’s haircut perfectly.

It is to create the best version of that idea for you.

Same reference.
Different hair.
Different technique.

That is where barbering becomes personal.
