Why a Great Fade Is About More Than Clippers
Sou (Japanese)

When you see a beautiful fade, the first thing you notice is usually the smooth transition on the sides.

So it is easy to think:

“A good fade is all about clipper technique.”

But creating a great fade involves much more than simply using clippers well.

At HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER, we look at the entire haircut—from the shortest section near the skin to the shape and movement of the hair on top.

The Fade Is Only the Foundation

Clippers are essential for creating a clean graduation.

But once the fade reaches the longer hair above, the approach changes.

This is where controlling the weight becomes important.

If too much hair is left around the upper sides, the haircut can look heavy.

If too much is removed, the top can feel disconnected from the fade.

A smooth fade needs a smooth connection.

Clippers and Scissors Work Together

This is why we often combine different techniques within one haircut.

Clippers create precision in the shorter areas.

Scissors help us control length, texture, movement, and weight in the longer areas.

Sometimes we also use clipper-over-comb or scissor-over-comb techniques to refine the transition between them.

The goal is not to show which tool we used.

The goal is to make the transition disappear naturally.

The Top Changes How the Fade Should Be Cut

Imagine three customers.

One has a short textured crop.

One has a center part.

One has a slick-back.

Even if all three want a fade, we would not necessarily approach the sides in exactly the same way.

The amount of weight we preserve depends on the hairstyle above it.

A fade should support the hairstyle—not exist separately from it.

Hair Growth Changes the Technique

Another important factor is how your hair naturally grows.

Some hair grows straight outward around the sides.

Some grows forward around the temples.

Some becomes particularly dense around the back of the head.

Instead of following exactly the same fade pattern on every customer, we adjust the technique to those characteristics.

This is particularly important with thick, straight hair, where small differences in length can noticeably change the silhouette.

Look at the Whole Haircut

A technically beautiful fade is only successful if the entire hairstyle looks good.

That means checking:

The front.

The side profile.

The back.

The connection to the top.

And how the haircut moves when it is styled.

At HIRO GINZA PREMIUM BARBER, our approach combines precise barbering with the detailed scissor work found in Japanese hairdressing.

Because the goal is not simply to create a beautiful fade.

It is to create a complete hairstyle—with a fade that belongs there.
